New Divorce
The green jade necklace
You bought and gave to me
The day before our wedding
Has now been put to a different use
Where once it hung around my neck
A heavy geological witness
To the legally-binding vows
I took that day.
Or languished for long years
In a locked box
Inspiring nothing but denial
And proactive forgetting.
The jade now hangs on two twisted tacks
Hammered into the doorjamb
Of my new batchelor pad
Holding back pink silk drapes.
It has become a fancy tie-back
For the curtaining veils
That conceal the doors of perception.
