Rosemary For Remembering

Rosemary For Remembering

By the gate I realise
The Rosemary has died
Into a slow spreading sun-starved yellow.
And I think that Memory
Doesn’t prosper in this garden
Nor does Honesty, Forget-me-not
Nor Thyme.
Seeds that fail me
Year after year
Dead, unborn, lost
Memory, Honesty, Forget-me-not and Thyme.
The eternal shade of
Scandinavian evergreens
Glooms out the noonday sun
Hydrophilically sucking moisture
Away from the thin dry soil.
Bindweed abounds
With tearing bramble and poison ivy.
Death stalks in Foxgloves and Yew.
Beneficent but invasive
Chickweed and Cleavers
Clamour and compete
For sparse dappled sunlight,
Gyre under the looming tree canopy.
And I think that Memory
Doesn’t prosper in this garden
Nor does Honesty, Forget-me-not
Nor Thyme.
